Future Economy Collective is hosting a variety of events at our new space, located at 700 N. Main St, Suite E, Blacksburg VA, above Mill Mountain Coffee and across the hallway from the Brow Bar. The space facilitates our mutual aid work, community-building, and overall capacity-building.

May Events

  • Boundary Setting Workshop: Tuesday May 12, 6:00pm-8:30pm Join us online and in person to learn about the body’s natural rhythms through stress and release, and gain shareable language and skills that the group can use to support one another through those cycles. The Community Resiliency Model trains groups around the globe following activating events to support the group’s return to balance and increase our resiliency in the midst of chronic stress. For the second part of the session, we will explore how sharing a no with someone can actually be protective and lead to a better, more sustainable and fitting, YES.

  • Mutual Aid Distribution: Sunday, May 17th from 2pm-3pm behind the North Main Laundromat at 1003 N. Main St, Blacksburg. Take what you need, leave what you can. Food, toiletries, and household supplies are available at no cost and with no questions asked. Future distros will be held every third Sunday of the month from 2pm-3pm.

  • Book Swap Wednesday, May 20th from 7:30pm-9:00pm at the FEC Space. Are your bookshelves too empty or too full? Whatever your problem is, the book swap will solve it. Bring any books that could use a new home, and take home some new books to add to your collection.

  • Shortform Writing Contest: Submit through May 20th to [email protected] using the subject line “Southpaw Shortform.” Works should be between 500-1000 words. The winner will be announced May 30th.

  • Weekly Planning Meetings: every Sunday from 3pm-5pm at the FEC Space, 700 N. Main St, Suite E, and online through Google meet, found at this link. Anyone interested in being involved with the planning and shaping of FEC is welcome to join.

Volunteer Opportunities

Help with the community fridge

We are looking for some dedicated volunteers to clean out the community fridge and pantry, either one time or reoccurring. Cleaning entails throwing away any food that is no longer fresh and wiping down the shelves.

Mutual Aid Distro

We can always use volunteers for our monthly third Sunday Mutual Aid Distro! Sunday, May 17th. Help sort supplies from 1pm-2pm at the FEC Space, then head to the North Main Laundromat at 1003 N. Main St, Blacksburg from 2pm-3pm to hand out food and household goods. Anyone can take what they need and leave what they can.

Kroger Community Rewards

Did you know you can give FEC free money every time you shop at Krogers? Select Future Economy Collective through the Kroger Community Rewards Program, and Kroger will give us a donation every time you shop! Simply sign in to your account then go to kroger.com/account/communityrewards. If you are using the app, go to "Rewards" then "Community Rewards." Search for "NH184" or "Future Economy Collective" and enroll..

Free seed library!

Our free seed library is stocked, thanks to a donation from the Montgomery County Master Gardeners. Check out our full selection of seeds, including veggies, flowers, and herbs. These are seeds from last year, so it is recommended to plant twice as many as germination rates will be lower.

The seed library is located next to our community fridge and pantry at Ukirk Ministeries in Blacksburg. See below for a map!

Support our efforts

All monetary donations support our day-to-day operations or are invested directly back into the community through our free fridge and mutual aid distros. Everyone at FEC is a volunteer, so no donations go towards salaries. Please consider making one-time or recurring donations through Zeffy (preferred), Patreon, or Paypal.

The Community Fridge and Pantry behind Ukirk Presbyterian Campus Ministry at 305 Washington Street SW in Blacksburg are always open for donations. Needed items include cleaning products, toiletries including menstrual products, and non-perishable foods such as peanut butter, canned proteins, pasta, and baby food. Make sure to include a full ingredients list on any home-made items, and write the date you added them to the fridge.
